Renewal

Butte patients should take care of renewal before their current Montana medical marijuana card expires. Completing the process early can help avoid a lapse in dispensary access and gives patients time to gather updated physician paperwork, finish the online renewal, pay the fee, and wait for state review.

Is Renewal Required for Butte Medical Marijuana Patients?

Yes. Montana requires patients and designated caregivers to renew their medical marijuana cards annually. If the card expires before renewal is approved, the patient may temporarily lose active status in the state program.

What Steps Do Butte Patients Follow for Renewal?

Butte patients usually renew by securing a new physician statement, updating their online application, and submitting the required Montana renewal payment.

Get a New Physician Statement: Patients must obtain a fresh Physician’s Statement for a Debilitating Medical Condition from a Montana-licensed Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy. For minor patients, Montana requires the proper minor patient physician statement, which may involve two licensed physicians or an eligible specialist.

Update the Application in TAP: Butte patients complete renewal through Montana’s TransAction Portal. During the process, they may need to update their personal details, upload the new physician statement, provide a current photo, submit Montana residency proof, and complete the renewal fields.

Submit the Renewal Payment: Montana charges a $20 renewal fee through TAP. This payment applies only to state renewal processing and does not include the physician visit or medical cannabis purchases.

Print the Temporary Card if Provided: After the renewal is submitted, Montana’s Cannabis Control Division may provide a printable temporary card through the portal. Butte patients may use this temporary card while waiting for the physical card, which may take up to six weeks to arrive.

How Long Does a Montana Medical Marijuana Card Last?

A Montana medical marijuana card is generally valid for one year. Butte patients and caregivers should renew before the expiration date, even if no reminder notice is received.

What Is the Renewal Fee for Butte Patients?

The Montana state renewal fee is $20. Butte patients may also pay a separate provider fee for the updated physician statement or medical evaluation. Dispensary purchases are separate from the renewal cost.
